Excersus XXVII: Angel With Scabbed wings
It's been a bit of a while since we've seen Phinehas and his dad. Henchmen are always interesting, and religious henchmen doubly so. As long as they exist, you can plausibly attempt to forgive The Leader of wrongdoing. Just as there are those who attempt to save Hitler from responsibility for the Holocaust by placing the blame on Himmler, Heydrich, Mengele, and various others whom they make out to be overzealous in filling in the blanks of Hitler's orders, so there are those who attempt to use Moses, Eleazar, and the lot to excuse Jehovah. Historically, this is somewhat backwards - the authors are clearly using Jehovah to justify the terrible things their ancestors did, but for the theologians who actually believe that all of these events, or a version of them, happened, the argument is sometimes made. The problem, of course, is that Jehovah is supposedly omnipotent and omniscient, which means that there is no "It's Not My Department" argument that Yahweh can make. But as awful as all these things that happen under the old god's watch are, there is a whole book of Terrible that we haven't even cracked yet. Which brings us to the next episode...
