Excersus XLIX: The Pig Deal
This episode is going up a little early because I am taking a 6:00 am flight Friday to attend my grandfather's funeral. With his passing, I am now without living grandparents, and the thought is eerie. My grandfather was raised in a small Pennsylvania Dutch community, served in the Second World War, built bridges for the state of California, and when he retired he built a Colonial house with his bare hands in the middle of a forest, populating it with large paintings of John Paul Jones and Henry VIII, and raised animals on the surrounding land. He loved history, and most of our time spent together during the last decade and a half had been devoted to comparing our favorite American and European history authors. He was the only person in my family I could do that with, and now he's gone.
